Abi's very late Power of Place
For my power of place I chose Speech Team. Since the speech season goes from October till March it takes up alot of my time. I consider all the members of the team as a part of my family and I love them all dearly. I decided to write out words that I think of or associate with speech and put them in my pictures. The first picture has the words around me as if I was saying them and performing. The second shows how the words are what makes me who I am, not the clothes. The third are like the thoughts that form in my mind. The fourth is a little collage I made of things that are from speech. And the last is part of my speech family from last year. I find great joy from the team and I love it! It makes me sad that people don't try speech because it's alot more fun then people think it is. And that's my power of place! :)

Megan's Comments
Maddy: I LOVE this idea. This is one if my favorite travelling objects I’ve seen. It has a deeper meaning because it doesn’t show where an object has been – it shows were you’ve been. The shots are natural and really clear. There’s a couple of shots where it’s just your feet and none of your legs, and I think if they included your legs they’d flow better with the rest of the grid. In the bottom left corner, the focal point is more-so on the pants, and I think if it was cropped a little bit it would flow a little bit better too. But overall I really liked this, really good job!
Keely: I thought the idea for your power of place was really interesting. The last two are by far my favorites, I think the short depth of field is beautiful. The first two don’t look as “organized” if that makes sense. The colors don’t flow as nicely as the second two. I’d play around with the hue/saturation and the brightness/contrast and see how it looks! Overall good job though, I really like this idea and I’ve never seen someone do this before!
Paul: I really like the 1st, 5th, 10th, and 11th. They have the most feeling and the best composition, in my opinion. I think those are the ones that give off the feeling of emptiness the best. The grainy effect is kind of cool, but I would try toning it down and see how it looks. For the pictures that have selected color, I’d make them all black and white because I feel like that’d flow a lot better with your feeling of emptiness you were going for. Overall great job!!
Sean: Your photos are a little masculine for my taste hahaha. That’s really my only critique – the black and white is really classy. The second is still my favorite, I love the short depth of field in that picture as well as in some of the others. It makes them look a lot more professional . You’re a great person, stop poking me with the keys. Kbye great job.

Mackenzie: Your idea to use your grandpas little farmer man was cool. I really like the way you edit them. It made the mood a bit dark and gloomy, but it’s strange because the thing is still smiling. The angles you used were cool because it made it look large or just distorted. Good job!
Maddy: I really liked hearing about your project before I even saw it. I thought it was going to look weird and many of the pictures being the same. But you did a really great job using different backgrounds/floors for the pics. Very creative and I like the edits.
Pip: I liked you idea for the “depression Story”. It was very creative. Some of the pictures are a little hard to make out because the color or contrast. But other than that, great idea. Oh, and I like the different camera angles.
Xanda Panda: I really like the feeling the picture gives off. Most of the photos in it are bright and fun. Like the ones of your pets and the basketball. I do have to agree with most people, the photo in the top left corner, I thought it was two different ones at first and couldn’t find the worm, but after you explained it, I could see it and it was all good. Nice job

Maddy- I really like how you shot your own feet. I mean lots of people try to shoot photos like that, but the fact that you made it your traveling object changes it to make it more meaningful. The only critique I have is that the one black and white photo is kind of out of place, since the others are all color. If you re-edit, consider changing a few more to B&W to mix it up a little.
Mackenzie- I like the good mix of B&W and color in your traveling object. The bokeh shot at the top is my favorite I think, because it kind of ties it together. The only thing I would change is the middle and right photos of the middle section. They are both shot from pretty much the same angle and since they are right next to each other it is kind of repetetive. Consider switiching the location of one of these photos in the layout since they are right next to each other.
Mengan- Your photos are a little girly for my taste hahaha. Thats really my only critique; I think they turned out pretty classy. I like how you thought to use the silk background to enhance the classiness of the jewelry. I think that your photos would have also doubled as a sick ad project. If I was a woman, I would be inspired to wear that jewelry.
Paul- I dig the photos brO. I like the layout you did with comparing the old photos with the new, contrasting the old happier photos with the more desolate looking ones, now that the house is empty. It made me a little sad. My only complaint is that I didnt think the one B&W photo didnt really fit in, since all the rest were color. I liked your use of vignettes though.

Mr. Evens: liked how you wnet all macro on you bike and tools, the images were sharp, with the background out of focus as it should be. an improvement would have been to better control the lighting to achieve less of a glare, which i thought took away from the macro effect.
Maddie: im diging the vintage effect! it gave the opicture a deeper feel. i, however would say that you could have gone a little farther with this effect, and prehaps made it less yellow (which might just be the effect, i dont know)
Pip: I liked the effects you put on your progression story, and how the pictures progressively got darker as the story went on. A few improvements would have been to maybe use more visible grid lines to better separate the images, also, maybe less of the dark and distorted effect would be great, I could hardly see the subject in some of the images, but that may be the point.
Megan johns: I really liked your macro effect! And how you shot it on a cloth, to make it look like a jewelry store. An improvement that could be made would be to take away some of the glare of the shiny cloth.

Sean (Close Up Project): Sean I really liked your close up project of all the metal pieces. I liked how you showed a lot of detail in the photos. I also liked how you had good dept of field and good contrast.
I think it turned out really well with the macro lens and I think shooting it in black and white looked really artsy.
Pip (Depression Story) : Pip, I really liked how your project turned out. I don't think I could take a picture of someone being depressed and I think you showed that really really well. I think it would of looked a little better with some color to it though. Also if you showed why the girl was so depressed, that could of helped people follow the story a little bit better. Other then that I think you did a great job.
Nina ( Travailing Object): Nina I really liked your travailing object. I liked how it was a transparent object so that light would come through. I also liked the contrast and colors in it. It looked very nice in nature like in the grass and by the flowers. it kind of showed how it belonged there. I enjoyed this project a lot.
Haley ( Travailing Object): Haley your project was interesting but I enjoyed it. I loved the different angles you had for the photos. the best part of this project was that you can set up the guy in different ways. I liked the poses he you made him make and I think you could of thought of way more things to do with it. I would say if you to a well known place like for example New York, you should do it again with this object cause i think that could be really cool.

Pip (Depression Story)- Well I think the idea of a depression story was good. But I felt that you could have done so much more with it than you did. I liked the black and white aspect of it because generally I would associate colors with happiness, so what if you made the pictures where she was smiling a bit lighter and brighter and perhaps in color. Also I feel like the black and white should have been a bit more consistant, some pictures were just really contrasted while others were extremely dark and I couldn't see really anything. I think you could have also had a bit more of a story format, I could see the happiness part then BAM, she's upset but where's the part where it shows what happened to make her depressed? Well anyhow I really liked the picture where it was close up to the upper part of her face and the one where she was on the swing.
Haley (Small Adventures)- I loved your traveling object! I thought it was creative and would make a good subject. I liked the way you used different angles and had him doing different things (like sitting by a fire, crossing the street, you know). I personally think that more of the pictures should have been in black and white, I feel like it looked smoother when it was desaturated and everything looked softer.
Sean (Close Up)- I really liked the way you edited the pictures, the high contrast gave it a really good look with the black and white. I also like the way they all are edited similar so they go great together. The only thing I would really say that should be a little better is the focusing, I feel like a couple of them could be sharper.
Ian (Traveling Object)- Ian!!! Well I really like the fact that your monkey really was traveling and was everywhere and no two pictures were really in the same place. I think that you could use some creativity (that I know you have) to edit your pictures in a really cool way. So I would just say to work on some editing and the final product would look excellent!

Maddy(feet traveling object) -I think this was a really creative idea for your traveling object! I like that you chose something that we actually use to travel! I like that you made a lot of the pictures different directions so that the feet didn't all point the same way. Maybe instead or having all the feet a bird's eye view you could try a worm's view or like do the side or bottoms of your feet. But I really like this idea, good job!
Mackenzie(wooden man traveling object) -I really like how you used lots of different angles and I love that you used some non-traditional things like the unfocused on in the middle on the top and the reflection through the glass. Those are really cool! Maybe next time you should try and not put the biggest picture right in the middle because my eye is automatically goes to that picture and it takes away from all your other pictures. So maybe making sure that you don’t have all the attention in one spot next time will be better. But great job, I really like it!
Pip(depression story) -Pip, I think it was really brave of you to pick something like this, kudos. I really like that you were able to use the contrasts of black and white to help get the feeling of depression more depth. Maybe next time though you could start the story off with some color and show how maybe the color is drawn out of her life and she becomes more depressed and make it get darker as she goes. That way you get some more variety and it will make more of an emphasis on the actual story. Great job though!
Keely(power of place) - I really like this idea! This was a really creative way to show us how these places have memories/importance for you. I like that you didn’t scan the pictures you actually held them up in front of where they originally were. Maybe next time you could edit the pictures that were the “today” pictures so that they kind of had the same like vintage-y look or feel. Or possibly even done like a movie effect to give it more depth and emotion. But overall, great job! I love it!
Paul(power of place) - I like how you edited your pictures Paul. They have great contrast and emotion in all of them. They seem empty and the contrast with the original pictures is really cool. I also like that you didn’t take the picture in the exact same place as the original just to show how much things had changed. Maybe next time you could keep the original pictures on the left and the “today” picture on the right so that we naturally look left to right and see how it has changed since then. But otherwise I think you did an awesome job.
Project 1- Close Up
For my close up project I shot various metal pieces and tools around my garage. I shot with Pauls macro lens and used a low depth of field to make it more abstact. In editing, I made all of the photos high contrast black and white, because it makes it harder to tell just what the pieces are, and you can focus more on the texture of the metal.

Maddy: Loved all the different colors in your picture. It really made each one stand out. I also really like that they are all different sizes it makes the picture more interesting. I wish I had done that with my traveling object. One picture on the bottom you can't really tell those are feet you could have edited it differently but other than that great photo!
Klew: I love the idea of this. It turned out so cool. I love the timeline and the text in the background. I just would have liked to see a little more color but the whole concept of your photo is great. Very artsy and I'm sure all the time you spent on it is worth it now!
Megan: I liked all you different jewelry. I like how you edited the pictures to go along with the vintage jewelry. The only thing I would have liked to see would be maybe not the same background every time. I liked all of the angles you did as well.
Paul: I liked how you did the old and new theme. Some of your photos were edited to make the picture look kind of scary so you can't tell as much that this place mean a lot to you. I also really liked the before and after pictures it makes me see you actually in the house having fun.
Sketchbook
For my sketchbook I have chosen to do "decades" and go through different decades and fashions and styles from them.

Keely- I really really love this idea. I like your idea of “before and after” and how you gave each one an older, more vintage look. I also like how you held the older picture in the same place it was taken. When I look at them it really makes me think back to old memories from my childhood! So, awesome job! The only thing that sticks out to me that could possibly be changed is the glare on some of the older photographs but I know that’s a hard thing to edit out! But overall I really love this idea and you did a great job!
JLo- I really love this! And after looking through your pictures this school looks awesome! I love how you chose to shoot a place that you can tell you really love, and I really like the way you combined the pictures! I also really like how the map is in the background, but I also like how you kept more emphasis on the actual pictures. I love the look of all the old buildings together and think you combined them really well! One thing that could possibly be changed is to the far right two of the pictures could have been combined a bit differently, but I really love this idea and the final product!
Pip- I like the idea and a lot of your shots! But I really can’t tell whats going on from like the swing one and on because it is so dark! I’m wondering if they are getting darker the more depressed she gets? Or maybe I have it all wrong! But I really really like the idea and raising awareness of depression and stuff! The only thing is the darkness, good job!
Nina- I really like the object you used! I like how you can see through the bird, which gives the pictures a little more depth! I also really like how you put the bird in the flowers, and how its around natural things. One thing that I may of changed is the variation in the picture sizes! But overall I really really like this!
Maddy's traveling object
For my traveling object I decided to use some photos I had taken over the summer and then some that I had recently shot. Over the summer I traveled quite a bit, and decided to take a picture of my feet in each place that I went to. I thought this fit for my traveling object because of all of the memories that go along with each picture. Each one was taken at a different time in a different place, wether it was at the beach, or at a number of different farms, etc. When it came to editing the photos I decided not to edit them to much, I liked the look of giving them a lot of contrast and I desaturated one of them, and turned it black and white. In that one I thought the ocean foam and the sand had an awesome contrast that really stood out. I also liked the idea of having my lines be different thicknesses, and having the individual pictures all being different sizes.

Traveling Object
First of all I chose this little wooden man because it was my Grandpas. He died when I was 5 or 6 years old and we got very little of his belongings, this of course was one of them. I think it's funny looking and I rather enjoy it so that's why I chose it as my traveling object. For this project I shot my object as I would shoot any animal or person, I followed the rule of thirds and tried my best to shoot him at many different angles and ways. For most of the pictures I desaturated them or just lowered the saturation so it wasn't so vibrant. I cropped most of the pictures so they'd fit within the boxes better and to help out with the composition. I also used curves to adjust the brightness and contrast. For the top center picture and the bottom center picture I color burned them to give it a greenish tint. I had also used the burn and dodge tool.
Sean Evans Final Project Photographer
My photographer is going to be Toby Keller, a guy who "paints with light" using long exposures and some kind of colorful light source. Im probably going to make it a little more "ghostly by making the photos black and white, so it isnt as obvious as to what the light streaks are.
Reviews.
Megan: I love the way the colors turned out in these photos. It looks vintage and very well thought out. nice work.
Pip: I like the way your photos were edited but some of them for me a a little darker. Maybe brighten them up next time. overall great work.
Paul: I like how you had an original photo with you and you took it in the orginal spot and place. It looks really cool. one thing that i would change is that some of your photos are crooked but other than that nice job.
Jacky: I love your project. The concept is really interesting and a cool idea. one thing i would change would be to do the squint test. I think the top left picture should be the focus of the project because it looks the coolest out of all of them. And to make the lines more even and the same width. nice job.

Power Of Place
This photo consists many things in my life which is mainly family. This is a series of portraits that show how I’ve progressed over the years. It also shows dates like a timeline, to show you the years of growth and development over the 17 years of my life. I used masking for the text. I used Black and white for contrast. I also used opacity to make the photo a bit see through.

Megan Jones: What I like - I love how the glossiness of the fabric can really make the jewlery pop. What might work a little better - if some of the pictures were a little darker? It might make the jewlery pop more if some places were burned.
Xander Martin: What I like - how original some of the places were that your object traveled. What might work a little better - spreading apart the pictures of the dogs. And the edge of the mailbox I thought was one of your separating lines and I looked at the doorbell for like five minutes trying to find the bait. Ha.
Pauly G: What I like - I straight up love the editing on some of your photos. They're really eye catching. What might work a little better - if the pictures seemed to go together more. Like more of a common theme?
Keely Walker: What I like - Mary Feltes. Just kidding but not really. I love how soft and creamy the lighting is in some of them. What might work a little better is if the first and last ones fit in with the middle three? Like went together a little more? Individually they're ridiculously beautiful. Like Mary. Ha.

Xander Martin - Traveling Object
I really like the color of your particular object and how you used it against a couple of different neutral backgrounds, but in your top left-hand corner picture I can't see your traveling object at all and it's really hard to see in the bottom left-hand corner as well. I would also suggest maybe toning down the saturation or completley taking out the saturation of a couple of pictures because there is so much color it's hard to get a good distinction between each picture.
Jacky Rowe - Traveling Object
I really love the shoes as your traveling object, especially the contrast between the running shoes and the beat-up converse. You have a good variety of angles, but a lot of your pictures have lots of green in them and makes the distinction between some less obvious. The big picture of the shoes lined up on a railing in the right hand column is good with the difference in saturation and coloring, but I think you might need to de-saturate or lessen the saturation of another picture.
Nina Antonik -Traveling Object
I love the dimensions of the glass bird and how much you placed it in pictures with a lot of color. Your lighting choices are also really good, but makes seeing the whole shape of a bird hard to see sometimes. For example, the picture in the top right-hand corner, and the middle picture in the left-hand column. You could try playing with saturation to hopefully fix this.
Jackie Logan - Power of Place
I really like how you put your pictures on a map of the university campus, it's a really creative and different idea and it really helps convey the point of your piece. All the pictures on the left-hand half are nicely placed and clearly visible, but the pictures on the left-hand half are hard to determine the differences between because though I understand the coloring of the pictures, they're all kind of smushed together. Maybe try just putting more space between them or changing the angles or something so you can tell what all of them distinctly are.

For this projecrt I used my monkey for traveling, this monkey is special because it was one of the last things my father gave to me befor he passed.
I used a lot of cropping to help the rule of thirds and the balance of the photos.
Also for many, I had adjusted the contrast or the color.
I was able to take pictures of my monkey at the Sandwhich fair, a campground, and in down town Winfeild.
Keely Walker (close up)- I really like your pictures. I think it is really cool to see how the scenes have changed.. dramatically. One thing I would change for improvment would be maybe having the original picture taken in the room it is of. I think it would be cool to make that connection as a viewer.
Megan Jones (close up)- I like the lighting and the differnt textures. I really think that the way you photographed different angles of the rings was neat. In some of the pictures the lighting whites out the fabric a bit. I don't know if this is an effect you were going for or not, but if not... i might of tried to mess around with the brightness and contrast settings to see if the pictures look better or not. Good Job!
Nina Antonik (Traveling Object)- I like the glass humming bird. It reminds me of a synthetic natural environment. Having it do things that a real humming bird would do is a great idea. One thing that i think would make it a bit better, in my oppinion, would maybe have your object be in more recognizable places.
Ben Hansberger (Traveling Object)- I like your idea using the skull. I especially like the one picture where there is a stick going thru the mouth of the skull. One thing I might change is all of the effects. I think some of the effects make it harder to identify the object, or where it has traveled.

MEGAN JONES: EXTREME CLOSE UP--> I really love the color in these pictures. It has a very soft feel and a vintage feel as well. If i had to change anything to the pictures it would be to maybe get even closer to some. They look great but they all look the same with no difference in close up's. But they look fabulous though!
KEELY WALKER: POWER OF PLACE--> I love the theme of this one. It is so neat how you took the picture of the orginal picture and then you took a picture of what that picture was taken of in current time. It looks very neat! If i had to change one thing about the pictures would have been the first one. I would have personally taken a centered picture of the orginal one so be simular to the others in the serise. Aside from that they look fabulous!
NINA ANTONIK: TRAVELING OBJECT--> The theme of this project is a great theme! I really love the glass bird. My favorite picture of the serise has to be either the one in the top left corner or the one in the bottom left! the look great. But if i had to chnge one thing about the pictures i would probably put more contrast and saturation for some. The look good, but more oclor could never hurt. Aside from that, amazing pictures!
BEN HANSBERGER: TRAVELING OBJECT--> Very intresting idea for the traveling object. I would never of thought of using a warthog skull. I love how the theme is death and its related to all the pictures. The only thing i would have changed would be that one really bright one in the left hand corner probably would need to be darkend because if the theme is death when i see that one it makes me think life with a warthog skull. Also the one in the top center it also is not the same 'theme' as the others in the serise. Even though those pictures contridict the theme of the project, it still as a whole looks great!

/ critiques
Megan Jones (close up): Hi Megan (: I really like your jewerly pictures. I really like the the pink satin background that you used. I highlights the jewerly really well and makes it pop. I like some of the angles you used, but I feel like their were some better angles you could have used. All in all, your photos are great! yay megan!
Xander Martin (Traveling object): Wuddup Xanderrrr! You have some really good photgraphs in your traveling object. I think that you could have re-arranged your pictures to make a stronger photography as a whole. But good job
Paullllllllllllieeeeeee:D (Power of Place): Hi Paul! So your power of place is still being edited- so it could change. But as of right now you have a really cool idea! I feel like you just need to use different filters.
Nina Antonik (Traveling object): HEYYY NINA! So, I helped you a lot with your traveling object. I feel like you should have made your favorite hummingbird picture bigger and in the upper left-hand corner.... but... no you didn't (: But you have some really amazing pictures in this project. Goooood job dude!

Extreme Close Up
Extreme Close Up
I chose jewlery as the subject to my project, because I like the way it looks using macro lenses. The only editing I used was increasing brightness and contrast, in order to give the photos more visual interest. I used natural lighting instead of studio lighting, because I prefer shooting in natural light and I wanted to experiment with the reflections the jewlery cast onto the silk. I used a silk background in order to make the photos look more elegant. I also angled the jewlery and the camera angles in order to get more visual interest.

In this project I made one of my main objectives to fit the rubber worm in to certain shapes to make it look like it belonged. I also used light and shadows put an emphasis on the worm. I also almost always followed the rule of thirds to make my pictures more interesting. I always made sure that the word was in random, but well fit spots. I wanted my viewers to think about the randomness of my photos. I also used different angles to give the view the impression of the worm having power or some time just plain normality.

/ power of place
For my power of place project I went for an old forgotten or nostalic theme. I used old kodak photos of me from my childhood to help portray the differences of however many years ago it was and what the places around my home look like today. When editing my photos I used the magic wand tool to select the old photos and then by using my photo tutorial technique: retro colors, I was able to give these photos an older look. I was really going for a before and after effect. I really want my viewers to be compelled to go back and remenice about their childhood, or just forgotten memories when they see my photos.
Thanks for viewing, have a nice day (:
power of place 1.5
So this is my power of place project. In this project you will see photos of my grandmothers house. Some pictures are befor and after of rooms in her house. I chose this place because when I was young my grandmother used to watch me when my parents were working so I spent a good part of my childhood in these rooms. I tryed to show how my grandmother kept the place up and made it look more lively. But now that she is gone, the place is empty. So I tried to try to make the pictures look kinda dark and glommy buy lowering the light and making the contrast high. I also put some layer mask and filters on some of them to try to change it around. So this house is my power of place and its special to me because I spent alot of time here in my life and now its basicly all gone and empty..
Traveling Object- Shoes (Jtrowe)
Where my shoes take me is my traveling object project. I could of done so many different objects to travel to random spots but i thought that I should really think of what I should travel around with and I chosed what thing ment he most to me and that are my running shoes. Running is a way of life for me and I have ran in many different places and am friends with different people that I have met in this journey. In this picture i combined many different pictures together to get the one. The one in the right hand top corner is my gym shoes on the Northside brige and that has value to me since that is where I love to run. The one below that is my best friends shoes and mine next together because we always have eachothers back and we are always together. The one under that is me and my Boyfriends shoes and we usually would sit on the bench outside on the porch together and since he means alot to me i included that picture in there. The rest are at north side as well and its different spots around the park that really had meaning to me since i grew up in that park and still am! Fopr the pictues themselves, I really emphasized on making the picture more vibrant and satuarted. I wanted them to have that look because it would make the color stand out and the colors look more seperated than all mushed and 'blahed' together. I also gave the pictures a photo filter of either a warming effect or a cooling effect. I also made sure that each picture was not the same size either because then for me at least it would of had a very consitant look, and that was not what i was aiming for. I really love how they turned out with the effects I gave them. I finished the picture with a black semi thick boarder around them to hug all the pictures together and bring them together. ---Jaclyn Rowe
Traveling Object
For this project I worked a lot with light projection to create shadows. I had to burn some of my photographs because the background had a lighter hue than the foreground. The glass bird has awkward angles so working on good angles in my pictures was a little bit of a challenge.
My traveling object
I used a warthog skull as my object to show death in many different settings. Displaying the subject as a possibility for everry preson in every walk of life. i partially desaturated the majority of my pictures to set a dark tone for the final product. The bright pictures present life and hope as a possibile solution.

Small Adventures - Traveling Object Project
My traveling object was done with small figurine that is ironically used for drawing.
I burned the edges of all my pictures to help make them look more like movie scenes and make the figurine seem more alive. I also played with the saturation of the pictures so there wouldn't be just one point of emphasis. I also used selective coloring in the bottom right hand corner and the top left hand corner pictures. I also changed the contrast in each of the pictures to make the figurine stand out more.
JLo's Power of Place
Madison
I chose to shoot the university of Wisconsin-Madsion for my power of place project because I would like to go there for college. I shot all the main buildings and social hangouts of the campus. I hoped to shoot this from a perspective that you would see that I was at a different point in my life and I have many paths I will have to take for my future. To portray this I put the map of the campus in the background to show all the different roads and paths. I blended all my pictures together so you would see Madison as a whole to have more of an impact instead of seeing one photo at a time.
